Maine Foliage Drive | Photographs

A collection of images from photographer Sara Gray following a favorite Maine foliage drive from Whitefield to Wiscasset.

A paved road curves through a rural landscape at sunrise, with a red barn on the left and open fields with grazing cows on the right. Trees with autumn foliage are scattered in the background.

  1. When were these pictures taken? I’m from South Louisiana and it’s still very hot here. Would be nice to have an early fall here.

    1. Certainly not taken this year. I was just in the area and there is only the slightest hint of color, and that is from summer stress, I think.

      1. Hi Mary and James. At the end of this Maine Foliage Drive post, we noted that it was first published in 2014. The photos, however, were likely taken in 2013 in preparation for the 2014 feature story in print. We like to share the photos at the very start of the foliage season to help inspire those planning their own leaf-peeping adventures for the upcoming season. Thanks!

    1. I know exactly what you mean. I look for fall where I can find it and try to make the most of it. It’s not the same, but it helps.

  2. My wife and I are planning a trip to Maine this fall. We’re from Oklahoma. We want to arrive with the full color foliage. Can you tell us when that is likely to occur?

    1. Hi Leroy, It varies but your best bet is the end of the first week in October until around the tenth of that month-Dick Hawkins

  3. I can smell the leaves here at my computer in Florida!! I can almost hear a bull moose calling for love in the distance. Thank you!!

  4. Can I subscribe to Yankee magazine in the UK? I’m planning a late Oct fall foliage trip and could use the help of the magazine

  5. Great, great pictures….I love fall better than summer or winter….although spring is pretty good. My birthday is in October, so I can appreciate these pictures even more than most other people!!!

  6. I live in the northern Rocky Mountains – we have wonderful scenery, too – but how I miss my New England roots! Thank you for the photos – wonderful memories re-ignited!

  7. The photographs are just beautiful. How I miss New England. Now living in California; but there is no place like New England. Thank you.
