Where’s the Best Lobster Roll in Maine? | Expert Yankee Picks

Following a meticulous rating system based on portion, meat texture and sweetness, saucing, bun, extraneous additions (e.g. the dreaded lettuce), and shack ambiance, we set out on a singular mission: to find the best lobster roll in Maine.

In 2017, Yankee senior food editor Amy Traverso embarked on “The Great Lobster Roll Adventure” up the Maine coast, from Kittery to Eastport, to sample nearly two dozen rolls and crown a champion. It wouldn’t be easy to compare so many rolls tasted only hours or days apart and determine one single “best lobster roll in Maine” winner, so she sat down and laid out “a set of criteria … as well as a searching and fearless written inventory of my own lobster roll biases.”

Here are her criteria:

How to Rate a Maine Lobster Roll

Extras: The beauty of the Maine lobster roll is its simplicity. Therefore, lettuce, with its bitter, vegetal flavors and tendency to wilt and turn slimy when exposed to heat or mayonnaise, has no place in any lobster roll, ever. Celery, shallots, lemon zest, lobster roe, chives — all may be considered on a case-by-case basis, but tradition runs deep here.

Sauces: Mayonnaise should be tossed with the meat just before serving or served on the side. Lobster left to sit in mayo absorbs its flavor and turns flabby. And while butter may be better (or not), it should be poured over warm meat, lest it congeal.

The Bun: The roll must be split-top, buttered, and toasted on a griddle.

Size: The whole shebang should fit into an average-size mouth, so that each bite is a medley of sweet meat, buttery bun, and sauce.

The Shack: Every great roll deserves a great view.

In the end, Amy made a list of top spots, compiled over several weeks of talking with local food experts and a source list from 15 years of personal experience, and then rated each roll on a 10-point scale based on portion size, texture, sweetness, saucing, bun, extraneous additions (e.g., the dreaded lettuce), and ambiance. In this Maine lobster roll mission, there would be no excuses for oversalted cooking water, overcooked meat, or a badly buttered bun. Wondering which rolls came out on top and which one earned the title of Best Lobster Roll in Maine? Read on.

The Best Lobster Roll in Maine

1. McLoons Lobster Shack

McLoons was Amy’s top pick for the best lobster roll in Maine. Describing the tiny red hut in South Thomaston with island views as “the lobster shack of your dreams,” Amy raved about the roll’s construction. “Not only can you get a half-and-half roll (one side butter, one side mayonnaise, sliced crosswise), but also they put the mayo in the bottom of the bun. Like a condiment! Which is what it is! The lobster tastes like lobster, the bun tastes like butter, and the sauces enrich the lean meat. One thing is certain: This will be hard to beat.”

2. The Lobster Shack at Two Lights

At this Cape Elizabeth shack, “the 180-degree view of the rocky shore is as impressive as the roll, which, bless them, is served with a dollop of mayo on top (or butter on the side). Just the right size, excellent bun.”

3. Quoddy Bay Lobster  [Closed]

At this shack at the easternmost edge of Maine, near the Canadian border in the town of Eastport, Amy described the meat as “the sweetest we’ve had so far.” Even better, “the kitchen garnishes each roll with two prettily preserved claws.”

4. The Clam Shack

The roll at this popular shack in the southern tourist town of Kennebunkport boasts “big chunks of meat, claws, and tail.” Despite the fact that the roll is served on “a fluffy, buttery hamburger bun,” Amy had to admit it was still pretty great.

5. Greet’s Eats

This Vinalhaven food truck serves a roll with meat that’s “more finely chopped than many, which makes for easier eating,” but Amy missed “the chew and tear of larger chunks.”

6. Boothbay Lobster Wharf

This perfectly portioned Boothbay Harbor lobster earned top marks for its sweet meat, but a disappointingly dry bun kept it out of the top 5.

7. Five Islands Lobster Co.

The postcard-perfect ambiance at this Georgetown shack scored a perfect 10, but the meat texture and sweetness came up a bit short.

8. Bite Into Maine

This up-and-coming Portland food truck with views of Cape Elizabeth Light serves its “Maine-style roll” dressed in mayonnaise and fresh chives. Sadly, the meat tasted too strongly of mayonnaise and the garnishes didn’t make up for that lack of sweetness.

9. Muscongus Bay Lobster

Tender meat and spot-on saucing made this Round Pond roll a worthy contender, but as much as it broke her heart to say it, Amy found the homemade roll too sweet.

10. Red’s Eats

On a similar “best lobster roll in Maine” quest nearly a decade earlier, this Wiscasset shack was Yankee’s top pick — and the traffic-jamming lines that snake from the counter every summer are a testament to its enduring popularity. But this time around, Amy found two problems with Red’s: While the sauces are served blessedly on the side, and the butter is poured from an old-fashioned enamel kettle into little plastic cups, the butter congeals as soon as it touches the cold meat. And these rolls are huge, much too big to bite into unless you remove half the contents. This drives the price up considerably (and Red’s takes only cash). But if you want tons of lobster and money’s no object, this is the roll for you.

11. Thurston’s Lobster Pound

Located at the base of Mount Desert Island, this shack, with its Instagram-ready wall of lobster buoys, is arguably one of the most picturesque in all of New England. After discarding the roll’s limp lettuce, Amy found meat that was wonderfully plump and tender, and a view to match.

12. Gurnet Trading Co.

This Brunswick roll may be the perfect size with good meat, but according to Amy, the lobster meat had communed too long with the mayo, and she gave the roadside ambiance.

13. Bob’s Clam Hut

The location (and large parking lot) in one of Maine’s busiest tourist towns takes away points for ambiance, but the perfectly griddled bun and blessed lack of lettuce or garnishes earned it a spot on Amy’s list.

14. Day’s Crabmeat and Lobster Pound

This roadside Yarmouth shack, a local landmark since 1926, serves up a no-frills sweet-meat lobster roll. (Even better is the classic Maine-style peekytoe crab roll, which is so labor-intensive to make that very few shacks even offer them these days.)

15. Harraseeket Lunch & Lobster Company

This South Freeport shack is a lovely place, with plenty of water views and red-striped petunias in planters, but consider yourself warned: This Maine lobster roll comes with a very assertive strip of lettuce.

16. Bagaduce Lunch

In Penobscot, this shack “offers noteworthy seafood and shady places to sit along the rushing Bagaduce River, but the lobster roll is much too heavy on the mayo.”

17. East Boothbay General Store

The lobster roll at this general store is a good size with tender meat and the perfect amount of mayo, but the French bread-style bun and extras (cucumber, lemon zest, chives, and lettuce) miss the mark. Plus, no good water view.

18. Estes Lobster House  [Closed]

This quirky and beach shack in Harpswell is in a great waterfront location and serves the lettuce on the side, but Amy noted with disappointment that the meat had been “marinating in mayo to the point of indistinguishability.”

Bonus Maine Lobster Roll Picks

Eventide Oyster Co.

The diminutive Maine lobster roll at Eventide Oyster Co. in Portland is so atypical, with its Chinese-style steamed bun and brown butter sauce, that it really needs its own taxonomy. But it’s too good to be ignored, so it’s included here. We’ve also got the recipe, so you can make one yourself at home.

Luke’s Lobster

The lobster roll is New England’s top culinary export, and Luke Holden, a third-generation lobsterman turned investment banker turned restaurateur, has made it his mission to spread the lobster gospel around the globe (there are currently 10 Luke’s locations in Japan). To supply the company’s 30-plus restaurants, Holden sources meat directly from Maine fishermen via his own seafood company, thereby eliminating middlemen and ensuring consistent handling and processing. At $17, the standard roll is reasonably priced by Maine standards and offers a taste of home to a homesick New Englander.

  1. The best lobster sandwich is not a roll at all..this I learned many years ago while spending a week on an island in Penobscot Bay with a friend and her lobster man husband. Simplicity at its best but with a twist. First very simple lobster meat with a touch of mayo..don’t drown it! I sometimes at a smidge
of tarragon ..go lightly..easy to overdo. Then, and this is the secret …grill like a toasted cheese sandwich! Guarantee you will never go back!

  2. Last September I ate across the street from Red’s Eat’s because the line st Red’s was so long around the corner. The Lobster sandwich I had was very good. I’ll have to stop in at McLoon’s this coming September for sure!!

    1. If you are across the street from Red’s you should have gone to Sprague’s It’s definitely the best and there is no long wait

  3. Warren Lobster House Kittery. Their Jumbo Lobster Roll is fabulous and, because this is a full service restaurant, they have a great salad bar and excellent drinks. We’ve not been to all of Amy’s choices (it’s a LONG drive from our home near the VT border), but have really enjoyed some of them. Still, Warren’s is our favorite.

  4. But only 1 was from the true Down East – – I think she tried the wrong places. Nothing like a Washington County lobster roll. Freshest you ill find anywhere

  5. Wonderful article and very informative. Plan on visiting Maine this summer.
All of the rolls looked delicious.. BUT…..
a guy from the south has to have some grits with his fish!!!!!

  6. It has closed, but it use to be Waterman Beach Lobster, South Thomaston
343 Waterman Rpad, Maine. We really miss that spot.

    1. Last time I was there before it closed it’s no-frills lobster bun was so fresh and sweet. I loved it.

    2. 100% Agree!!!! I was so sad when I found out they retired without passing the business along to someone new!

  7. Yall want a solid lobster roll go to camerons seafood in Brunswick only place in maine ill go ..smoke a doobie cruise out enjoy and vwala delicioso

  8. Best lobster roll in my opinion is at Robert’s Grill in Kittery. It is pack filled with lobster and is served on a perfectly buttered, sweet roll. Can sometimes be a little heavy on mayo, but that still doesn’t diminish the overall greatness of the lobster roll!

  9. Wow! From Fairhope Alabama! Staying in Popham Maine I think I steamed the best! Even though I forgot to take the rubber bands off claws, when I remembered I took it back out and dropped and it the claw got my big toe! I almost bled to death untill I put ice on it!! Then I ate the darn thing! It was great!

      1. Reds in Wiscasset Maine a little different from when I was growing up there but still one of the best in Maine

  10. The list should begin and end with Reds Eats. The illustrations in the article should leave that without question. Just my opinion here, but the number 2 rated lobster roll in this article comes with a pickle slice on it? Really?? What sort of maniac puts pickles on a lobster roll? Makes me question the whole list…

  11. Fisherman’s Catch in Raymond is one of my favorite places. The sheer amount of delicious, perfectly prepared, lobster in each roll makes it one of the best places in Maine.

    1. The hot lobsta roll- a Connecticut invention – warm lobster, melted butter, toasted roll, beats all the others by a mile. Glad to see some places in Maine carry it now. It’s 4 oz or more of fresh lobster without the hassle and mess of attacking a lobster in the shell. Still, there are times we want the whole shebang and that’s fine too.

  12. Love the list! Nice job, but you can be certain that I will not drive to Red’s after your review. Sometimes, too much is not a good thing, especially for the cash! I can fill up at home for half the price. I’ll put Bob’s Clam Hut or Brown’s(now that they’ve reopened), and Luke’s on my lobster bucket list.

  13. Best I’ve ever found, and I am a lobster roll snob, is The Maine Lobster Lady on Isle au Haut. Special shout out to The Red Barn in Augusta for its Crustacean Elation which definitely wins biggest!

  14. Erica’s Seafood in West Harpswell. They also have a great Crabster Roll if you can’t decide!

  15. Quoddy Bay in Eastport has posted on their website that they will not be opening for takeout this season.

  16. Footbridge Lobster in Perkin’s Cove has the hands-down best lobster roll ever. Plain, with a tiny bit of mayo, or with warm butter, on the best grilled buttered roll, with a bag of chips and a can of soda make this the quintessential place for the best New England lunch.

  17. Quoddy Bay Lobster in Eastport is the absolute best. The meat is as fresh and sweet as you can get. Not only are the rolls absolutely huge and guaranteed to have a minimum of 2 lobster claws (the jumbo has 3 or 4!), but you can get it dressed how you like with butter, mayo or miracle whip. The view, sitting by the bay is fantastic and you will likely see many whales, bald eagles and porpoises.

  18. Food trucks need a fair shake! The Ocean Roll in Arundel has a great lobster roll…but their fried clams and scallops make a FABULOUS side!! And A Taste of Maine in Arundel has a delicious one as well. But if you love fried haddock…check out the second one! Both will make your heart sing!! Tell Em Amy sent ya!

    1. Quidditch Bay Lobster in Eastport closed last year & this (2022) due to family illness.
I love Red’s except for the wait, but Belle Isle in Winthrop, MA is top notch, dine inside or on deck overlooking the ocean & watch the planes come & go at Logan.

      1. Will someone explain to me why that ridiculous wait at Red’s? What the heck are they doing in there – boiling and picking out every order as it’s made?

  19. Billy’s Chowder House in Wells deserves to be on any list of lobster rolls and chowder

  20. Footbridge Lobster Perkins Cove Ogunquit has the best lobster rolls. Served on toasted roll, with Mayo or butter on the side and 5 oz. of fresh lobster, excellent price and a beautiful view of the ocean.

      1. Take out only. A couple of benches across the road. You might also like to take your meal around the corner to sit on the benches with a beautiful view of the ocean.

  21. I second the recommendation of Erica’s in West Harpswell. Both the lobster roll and crabster are so fresh and delicious.

  22. Years ago when I was stationed at Pease Air Force Base in Portsmouth NH, Warrens in Kittery was the best. Red’s in Wiscassett too much hype.

  23. The lobster rolls from Footbridge Lobster in Perkin’s Cove are beyond excellent and among the best we’ve ever had. Plus, you can walk the Marginal Way from Ogunquit to get there which only adds to the enjoyment and overall experience.

  24. Sprague’s across the street from Red’s in Wiscasset is just as good as Red’s, costs about the same, and there is seating for diners. Red’s has only a couple of picnic tables. I am a native Mainer, and I never go to Red’s. It is a tourist destination only.

  25. Loved my lobster roll at Surf 6, Old Orchard, Me. Bun was grilled to perfection and overflowing with large chunks of lobster, little bit of mayo. Restaurant had nice ambiance and is right on the beach. Heavenly!

  26. After extensive research, I declare the best lobster roll to be H.J. Blake’s in Belgrade – lightly poached big claw pieces with made fresh daily lemon aioli on the bottom and clarified butter drizzled on top, in a hot dog roll lightly grilled with butter. It’s the stuff of fantasies!! Great price, too! ($25)

  27. Hazels in Rockland Maine super delish liked it more than reds plenty of lobster 1/2 th red priced of reds

  28. In my humble opinion Dunton’s Doghouse in Boothbay Harbor, and the Mariner in Camden. Dunton’s closes around Columbus Day. The Mariner is open year round, great little restaurant with that most amazing, quintessential view of Camden Harbor.
