On a clear day you can just about see the rocky shores of western Ireland from a good seat at The Wharf restaurant at Connecticut’s Madison Beach Hotel. Well, not really–actually, you’re looking south–but the view of Long Island Sound is vast and breathtaking.
A chef here could depend on the vista alone to captivate diners’ senses, but Brendan Treyball relies on talent as well, creating thoughtful renditions of shore-food favorites–spicy shrimp scampi, for example–plus a super-fresh raw-bar selection and a simple-yet-satisfying lobster roll.
The original hotel was constructed in the early 1800s as a rooming house for local boatbuilders during the Age of Sail, and then, a century later, its replacement became a seasonal destination for tourists. This venerable hostelry is open this year until September 27.
