Boston is a great food town. And an expensive one.
I say that at the outset because while you will find excellent lobster rolls here, you may come up against some sticker shock. That is, if quality is a concern (I’m looking at you, McDonald’s lobster roll). Whereas most Maine lobster shacks, with their comparatively low overhead, aim to keep prices below $20 per roll, the best spots in Boston will top off at about $36. The price is elevated, in part, because the price of lobster is up. But then there are the higher built-in costs of rent, payroll, and other behind-the-scenes necessities.

To be fair, these rolls tend to be stuffed to capacity, requiring some diligent fork work before you can pick them up and take a bite. You’re paying about 50 percent more for a roll with 30 percent more meat, relative to our favorite Maine mainstays.
But if lobster is what you’re craving and you’re willing to splurge a bit, you’re in good hands here. We revisited nine top lobster spots in search of the best lobster roll in Boston and tasted the rolls (both cold-with-mayo style and hot-with-butter style, if they had them). We evaluated the quality of the meat, the bun, the amount of the mayo or butter, and the value of any added seasonings. Then we winnowed the list down to a winner and a runner-up.

As befits Boston’s geographic placement between Connecticut (home of the hot buttered roll) and Maine (land of the cold roll with mayo), most of these places offered rolls in both styles. And conveniently, the quality of the rolls was, with one exception, consistent across styles. If the hot one was good, so was the cold. So let’s get right to the winner and the runner-up.
Row 34’s most excellent roll is the best lobster roll in Boston. Photo Credit : Amy TraversoWhy: The meat in both the hot and cold rolls at Row 34 was the sweetest of the lot (chef-owner Jeremy Sewall sources it from his cousin, Mark, who captains a boat out of York Harbor). It’s enhanced by the sweet, buttery split-top New England hot dog bun and just-right applications of butter or mayo (along with some diced celery, pickle, onion, a bit of celery salt, and lemon juice). Note: You can also find this roll at Row 34’s second location in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Price: $36
B&G’s hot buttered roll with chives is the second-best lobster roll in Boston. Photo Credit : Amy TraversoWhy: High-quality meat (though not quite as sweet as Row 34’s), expertly sauced, on a split-top bun. B&G Oysters chef-owner Barbara Lynch modeled this restaurant on classic New England seafood shacks, not French oyster bars, and there’s an admirable restraint in the seasonings and flourishes. Plus, the fries and pickles on the side are excellent.
Price: $34

I am from Miami but I did my stint in MA, living in the town of Wayland. We have great lobster here but a lobster roll is non existent for some crazy reason. Anyway, on the weekends in Summer, we’d stop at a farm house on Old Boston Post Road and buy fresh tomatoes and veggies, then head to Dairy Joy in Weston. I thought it was a great lobster roll but I am far from an expert. I didn’t get into Boston much so I had to find my more local option. Just back from Nova Scotia and had a few lobster rolls, but they just don’t have the LR culture. I couldn’t agree more that pricing is far easier in Maine (Biddeford area for me). Anyway, really enjoyed our LB article and got me day dreaming again about New England sights and food. Thanks!
I think Kelly’s down Revere Beach has the best lobster roll. It has been 17 years since I have been back to Boston (live in Spring Hill, Fla) and boy do I miss a great lobster. Kelly’s would be the first place I will go to whenever I get a chance to get back “home”.
Lobster roll = lobster + light mayo on buttered New England hot dog roll. All others are frauds. Never add celery, lettuce, onions, or other nonsense. I had one with drawn butter and brioche roll that was nice.

Your all crazy. The best is a new place in Boston’s South End. Called LOBSTAH ON A ROLL. It’s probably the biggest and the best. All fresh not frozen. You can have it anyway you want. I chose butter and they don’t charge extra! They even have a five foot lobster roll! I saw the delivering 8 of them in an hour. You guys gotta go there its amazing!
$32, or $29 is too much for a lobster roll, no matter what the season. There is too much mark up from the lobster men who go out and get the lobsters to the restaurants that buy and prepare them Too many profit levels where everyone involved wants to make too much money for to little, and suckers will pay these prices because they have the money. But most people cannot afford to pay $32 for about 6 or 8 oz of lobster and bread with mayo or butter.
Nuh-uh. Best Maine Lobster roll is at McLoons Lobster Shack far off the beaten track in the Spruce Head fishing village section of South Thomaston. Barely 5-years in existence, each roll has meat from a whole lobster (unlike pretenders; knuckle and claw), and is equal to, or even surpasses, Wiscasset’s famed mainstay, Red’s Eats.
Ana, There is a small restaurant on Sanibel Island “The Clam Shack” that serves a damn good Lobstah Roll. Their seafood is flown in fresh daily and everything is fantastic and NE inspired. They even have coffee ice cream! It is family owned by a brother and sister team from New England. They keep it all authentic: lobstah roll, steamahs, plus other seafood such as crab, scallops, shrimp, oystahs, clam chowder, clam cakes. For land lovers there is chicken and angus burgers, saugys (hotdogs) and…. Yes, it’s a hike from Miami, but it’s closer than The Northeast coast. 🙂
right -on about Sanibel Island’s Clam Shack. I’m a New Englander now living in Florida alway go to this restaurant when I’m at Sanibel.. Everything there is terrific
I’m in Delray Beach but lived in Wayland for over 30 years. Some decent lobster rolls here in Florida but the ante will be upped when Kelly’s opens soon here in S. Florida

The best lobster roll I have ever eaten was at Red’s Eats in Wiscasset Maine. The line is long but the wait is worth every minute!!
Where I live in Burlington, I have to trust Legal, whenever they have them. I guess I have been swayed by “If it isn’t fresh, it isn’t Legal,” slogan.

I agree! The perfect lobster roll never disguises the sweet pure taste of the lobster, Red’s Eats in Wiscassett, ME has the World’s Best Lobster Roll!
Are you kidding me? $32 for a lobster roll? I don’t care how good it is, it’s not worth $32. What a rip-off.
Best lobster roll: Belle Isle Seafood, Winthrop.
How about the best lobster roll in Rhode Island and Southeaster Massachusetts.
this story has 2018 date why are all the comments from 2017?

Anything but a touch of mayo in my lobster roll. Won’t order it if it contains “other stuff”.
Stowe’s in West Haven CT, best hot butter lobster roll, hands down!
I agree with a previous comment…Belle Isle, Winthrop Ma right outside of Boston.

Ayup, totally agree! Can make my own better tasting, healthier, and less expensive at home!
