Fall has arrived, and with it, the return of the mighty apple! Apples are delicious plain, dipped in peanut butter, or sliced onto oatmeal, but we also love them baked into stunning pies, crunchy crisps, or dunked into caramel and chopped peanuts for a classic fall fair treat. Whether you pick your own at a local orchard or stock up at the market, we’ve got plenty of ways for you to use up this year’s apples. That is, if you don’t eat them all first!

HOMEMADE APPLE DUMPLINGS

Apple dumplings have roots in Pennsylvania Dutch country, where the pastries emerged as a clever use for leftover pie dough on baking day. They’re so delicious, though, that we’re happy to make up a fresh batch of pastry just for these alone. The sauce thickens as it cooks, turning into a rich and glossy syrup.

HOMEMADE APPLESAUCE

Both simple and delicious, a batch of homemade applesauce is a true treat and tastes terrific both hot and cold. You may never buy store-bought again.

  1. My very favorite recipe for apples was published in GOURMET Magazine many years ago. It is from a restaurant in Philadelphia called The Fish Market, which may no longer exist. The recipe calls for 6 cups of sliced apples, combined with an egg to bind it and sour cream, a little flour and sugar. The crust is a cookie dough that had apple cider and cinnamon and the streusel topping is dark brown sugar, butter, cinnamon and chopped walnuts. It is a lot of work, so I typically only make it once in the fall when the apples are nice and fresh. I would be happy to share the exact recipe if there is interest.

    1. Please share the Fish Market apple pie recipe. I’d love to make it to share at our UU Choir dinner this weekend. Thanks!!
