1 cup shortening (at least half of which is butter)
1-1/2 cups brown sugar
2 eggs
1-1/2 tablespoons water
2-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1-1/2 cups chopped dates or raisins
1 cup chopped walnuts
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cream together shortening and sugar. Add eggs and water. In a separate bowl, mix together flour, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, and cloves. Add to shortening mixture. Add dates or raisins, and walnuts. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto a greased baking sheet, 2 to 3 inches apart and bake for 12 to 15 minutes.
