These little round breads are similar to whole wheat English muffins.
1-1/2 cups white flour
1-1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup buttermilk
1 tablespoon cooking oil
3 tablespoons sour cream
Sift together flours, baking powder, sugar, and salt. Dissolve baking soda in buttermilk and combine with other liquid ingredients. Stir dry ingredients into liquid mixture. Knead briefly until of uniform texture, then roll out on lightly floured board to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut into 3-inch rounds and place on greased baking sheet. Bake at 425° F for 8 to 10 minutes, then turn over and brown other side for another 4 to 5 minutes. Cool on rack. To serve, split, toast, and butter like English muffins.
