Fairy Gold Cookies

An inexpensive cookie that’s easy to make from ingredients already in the house. Excellent with coffee or milk. If they don’t all disappear on the first day, you’ll find the flavor gets even better with age!

Yield

about 5 dozen

Ingredients

1 cup solid vegetable shortening
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup hot water
2-3/4 cups all-purpose white flour

Instructions

In a mixing bowl, cream together the shortening and sugar. Add the egg and beat until smooth. Add the baking soda dissolved in the hot water. Add the flour in thirds, beating well after each addition. Chill thoroughly.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease two baking sheets.

Form the chilled dough into balls about the size of walnuts and place 2 inches apart on the baking sheets. Flatten with a fork.

Bake for about 10 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool completely.
