New England lobster rolls are fairly new on the scene, at least relative to other classic regional foods. Perry’s in Milford, Connecticut, is credited with the invention of hot buttered lobster on a bun, c. 1929. Before that, there was the cold, mayo-dressed dish known as lobster salad, but as any New Englander knows, the bun’s the thing. Ideally, it’s split-top and griddled until buttery and browned. And hot dog buns are definitely a 20th-century invention.

So it’s taken fewer than 100 years for lobster rolls to become the ultimate New England summer dish, the it-isn’t-vacation-until-I-have-it standard-bearer. And wherever your travels take you in our region this summer, we’ve got you covered with our favorite New England lobster rolls in all six states.

We may prefer split-top buns in general when it comes to New England lobster rolls, but we’ll make an exception here. Owners Enea and Cathie Bacci serve a pile of beautifully buttered lobster meat in fluffy, Italian-style grinder rolls. And though it lacks the crisp exterior of a classic roll, it’s really quite delicious. One common peril of the Connecticut-style hot buttered roll is overcooked meat, but the Baccis cook their lobster with a careful hand. Combine that with their rustic, shack-chic eatery and the water view, and you have yourself a winner.

McLoons Lobster Shack in South Thomaston

Yes, the location is stunning: a small red shack on the water, with a working lobster pound mere steps from your picnic table. And it’s fun to watch the crews unloading crates while you tuck into your lobster rolls and grilled clams. But the roll’s the thing here, made with candy-sweet meat and served on a perfectly buttered bun. Even better, they serve the mayo in the bottom of the bun, rather than mixing it with the meat, and that clarity of flavor makes a bigger difference than you might expect. There’s a butter version, too, and half-and-half for fence-straddlers. In 2017, Yankee senior food editor Amy Traverso named it the best lobster roll in Maine after sampling nearly two dozen contenders.

Chef-owner Jeremy Sewall sources his lobster from his cousin, Mark, who captains a boat out of York Harbor, so the meat is always ultrafresh. We like both the hot-butter and cold-mayo styles (the later is jazzed up with aromatics like lemon and celery). The one caveat: You’ll pay Boston prices here. But we think that a roll this good is worth it. Note: You can also find this roll at Row 34’s location in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

While both the cold and hot lobster rolls at this tiny waterfront spot in Rye, New Hampshire, are tasty, we can’t resist the hot roll bathed in a butter-sherry sauce that brings to mind classic seafood dishes of yore, like lobster Newberg. The sweet meat and nutty-tangy wine are a heady combination, and even better when eaten with a cup of chowder on the side (it’s made with clams but comes with chunks of the same sherry-scented lobster meat).

Given the care with which owner Perry Raso raises his oysters in the waters of Potter Pond, it’s no surprise that the restaurant he opened at the eastern edge of that same pond takes no shortcuts with its lobster rolls. Lobster meat is sweet and tender, not oversauced, and abundant. Order a roll with a plate of fresh Rhody oysters, and you have yourself a meal.

Don’t underestimate New England’s only landlocked state when it comes to delivering in the lobster department. Honeypie, the casual sister restaurant to the Beard-nominated SoLo in South Londonderry, takes its burgers and sandwiches seriously, including a buttery roll accented with chives, lemon, and celery. It’s a welcome addition to a meat-driven menu and a great accompaniment to one of Honeypie’s signature milkshakes, which come in flavors such as salted caramel and rhubarb-basil. 1. Great lobster rolls at “The Canteen” in Provincetown, Na. Big chunks of lobster in a hot buttered roll; brings back great memories of summer at the tip of Cape Cod

  2. Living in California I crave and miss New England Lobster. I found Cousins Maine Lobster doing events near me. I go wherever they are
    Great lobster rolls!

    1. Also in California & have enjoyed Cousins. The Lobsta Trucks frequent our area more often and are scrumptious. We were lucky to have had Red’s as our introduction on our first trip to Maine and for the rest of our vacation I ordered the roll at every place we ate.

  3. Mason’s in Annapolis MD gets daily shipments of lobster from supplier in Kennebunkport Maine and offers well-stuffed for $15 or super-stuffed for $20. My personal fave in Kennebunkport is Mabel’s – great lobster rolls and homemade raspberry pie – a magical marriage!

  4. You can maybe equal but not beat FRESHIES in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah! (Owners are New Englanders, so what do you expect?!) Slingerlands, Provo, Utah

  5. How I miss my lobster, clams, and quahogs especially. Virginia doesn’t compare with New England. Nice, but not the same. B. WYLIE

  6. Moby Dicks in Wellfleet has fabulous lobster rolls. Amazing seafood and outstanding owners/staff!!

  7. Last Summer I tried lobster rolls at many many places around the North Shore of Mass and S NH. I am a lifelong New Englander and seafood lover. The best I found is at a little pop up that is back this year. Check out Salty’s in Middleton MA, it’s right across from Richardson’s Ice Cream and “The Lot” has expanded and now includes a few other food trucks, tons of outdoor seating, music, real bathrooms, and a few games. The lobster rolls are not inexpensive, but they are incredible!

  8. I am 81 years young and originally from MA. I have lived in land locked Wyoming for the past 38 years and I can only dream of lobster rolls, fried clams, and the many other sea foods I used to love. Those of you who live in New England and can partake of the wonderful offerings of the very near Atlantic, thank God and count your blessings. You’ll never know how lucky you are unless you no longer have those wonderful nights out at the beach or at your favorite restaurant for a beautiful fish dinner. I can still dream, but it sure isn’t the same. My best to all of you. Have a lobster roll for me. Thanks.

    1. Know how you feel! We lived in Florida for 7 years. They have no idea of the great seafood “up north”! First thing we did when we moved back: Drive up to Maine for a seafood dinner.

    2. I so agree with you Paula,,I live in New York and look forward to my Cape Cod vacation every year in August, Beaches and fried seafood nothing better!

  9. In Newport, RI you can’t beat the lobster rolls at Easton’s Beach (“First Beach”). I grew up in New England, but now live in New Mexico and go there on a yearly “lobster run.” The Easton Beach snack concession lobster roll may be the best in the Northeast.

  10. so in Michigan , a Irish pub called Mackle’s in Howell serves lobster rolls, while not NH of Maine it’s fairly decent and the price is right (14.00) !

  11. Having grown up in Boston, and having had access to good seafood in Florida and in Virginia, I was apprehensive about moving to Indianapolis. Then I discovered Caplinger’s whose Lobster roll is the equal of he best in New England. Some gourmet publication whose name I do not remember, has Caplinger’s Lobster Roll as the 19th best in the USA. Not cheap, but REALLY worth it!

  12. I guess your headline should be The Best in Each “New England” State. Smack Shack here in Minneapolis is pretty solid.

  13. McLoon’s in Maine isn’t even in the Top 10 there. Best lobster roll in Maine is at Footbridge Lobster in Perkins Cove. As for New Hampshire, the Rye Harbor Lobster Pound get votes due to its location, but by far the best lobster roll in the Granite State is served by Sanders Fish Market in Portsmouth.

  14. There is a little place in Holland mass called Maine Attraction. They have very good lobster rolls too and wonderful seafood dinners.

  15. No one mentioned the old Claire’s Annex food place in Watch Hill, RI. The best lobster roll with mayo, no lemon no spice, perfect! Expensive, yes, but well worth it. I’m in PA and the yearly trip to RI starts at Claire’s Annex, right off Napatree Beach(the best beach in New England) Just saying….
