Hot buttered lobster rolls reign supreme in Connecticut, where they were invented and where they represent the standard way of making lobster rolls. In search of a Connecticut lobster roll guide? We asked frequent Yankee contributor Mike Urban, a Connecticut resident and author of Lobster Shacks (Countryman Press, 2016) to dish up his top Connecticut lobster roll picks.

Best Connecticut Lobster Rolls

Guilford Lobster Pound, Guilford

Located on the back deck and dock of a small lobster pound, this mom-and-pop operation is owned by one of the last active lobstermen on Long Island Sound. The roll here is picked fresh from the daily catch, features four ounces of fresh-picked lobster meat, and is served at picnic tables overlooking the surrounding marsh, harbor, and nearby Grass Island. Be sure to try the clear-broth clam chowder, chock-full of fresh clams and speckled with lively seasonings.

Lobster Shack, East Haven

The shack recently relocated from Branford to East Haven, where wonderful, warm-buttered lobster rolls continue to be served up throughout the summer. Owner Arlene Crismale presides over the stand, assisted by her husband, Nick, a former commercial lobsterman and clammer. The lobster meat is heaped onto a toasted sub roll and spritzed with fresh lemon juice. You may also want to try a lobster toasted cheese sandwich or one of their homemade clam chowders.

Lenny and Joe’s Fish Tale, Westbrook & Madison

This perennial shoreline favorite still hits it out of the park with its generously portioned and buttered hot lobster roll, which is served on a toasted split-top New England–style hot dog bun with butter on the side. They also serve a good cold lobster roll here, though the hot version outsells it 10 to 1. Fried calamari makes for a great appetizer before you tuck into a lobster roll platter replete with coleslaw and French fries.

Lobster Landing, Clinton

Enea Bacci (known simply as “Bacci”) reigns over this dilapidated shack hanging on the edge of Clinton Harbor. Enter the shack to see workers pick and butter up the lobster meat, which is then served on an oversize, toasted Italian grinder roll that’s wrapped in tin foil and delivered to your table. Lobster Landing is BYOB, and pinot grigio and Italian beers are the preferred beverages for harborside dining. SEE MORE: Lobster Landing | Local Flavor

Captain Scott’s Lobster Dock, New London

Wedged between the Amtrak Acela train tracks and a charter fishing boat harbor, Captain Scott’s is hard to find but tough to beat when it comes to lobster rolls in southeastern Connecticut. This busy seafood shack serves up hot and cold lobster rolls in small and large sizes, offering plenty of options for the lobster roll–famished. Be sure to try the clear-broth clam chowder, a Rhode Island original that’s also popular in Connecticut.

Abbott’s Lobster in the Rough, Noank

Abbott’s is known far and wide as the place to go for all things lobster on the Connecticut shoreline. Housed in a massive, low-slung building on picturesque Noank harbor, Abbott’s slow-steams its lobsters in vintage midcentury cast-iron vaults that perfectly seal in their natural flavor. Hot lobster rolls come in three sizes: the standard four-ounce version; the “OMG,” weighing in at about eight ounces; and the “LOL,” which tips the scales at nearly a pound. All are served on toasted, buttered hamburger rolls with cups of melted butter on the side.

Ford’s Lobster, Noank

This relative newcomer to the Connecticut lobster scene popped up on Haring’s dock in Noank in 2010 as an add-on to the dock’s fuel and bait businesses. It has blossomed into a lobster magnet since then, offering a wonderful hot lobster roll and other lobster goodies, including the Lobster Bomb, a small loaf of hollowed-out bread stuffed with eight ounces of lobster meat and topped with a ladleful of lobster bisque. The harborside setting is rustically delightful. Where are your favorite Connecticut lobster roll spots? Let us know! This post was first published in 2017 and has been updated.

  1. Grill a buttered hot dog roll on the grill, then add Real Lobster salad made with Mayo, a speck of celery.. it is absolutely delicious… Go down Pequot Ave in New London by the Marinas, They sell this kid at that Shack !

  2. The new MGM in Springfield has a Lobster Shack there that is excellent .It is every bit as good as any of the lobster shacks that I have been to both in Connecticut and Rhode Island.

  3. my hubby and I live in California(northern) but I’m from the east and absolutely LOVE the eastern sea food especially lobster; we follow the “Cousins” Lobster trucks when they are in our area! Didn’t realize though that there are two different types of Lobster roll., one being the Maine style and the other the Conneticut ; both super good!

  4. I used to live in Connecticut and ask who would eat ANYTHING from Long Island Sound? Anyway unless you’re stuck there Connecticut is too expensive and cold!!

      1. Yes no haters please! I’ve lived here all my life and love my state CT. I’m proud to say I am a Swamp Yankee New Englander…OH YEAH! My Dad is from Vermont and it’s like Heaven on Earth up there…..

  5. You have to try 2 places in Fairfield County. Knot Norms in Norwalk and Heibeck Stand in Wilton. Been going to Maine for the last 30 years, I might know a thing or two.

  6. Liv’s shack at Marine One in Old Saybrook, serves the best lobster roll I have ever had and the fact that it is in my town is a bonus..

  7. The VERY BEST better than them all EDDS PLACE Westbrook CT ,, closes early open almost all year round very smal but MIGHTY GOOD love their lobster… BETTER THAN ALL THE REST!!!!

  8. Hello , I’m lucky enough to get my fresh lobster meat hand picked daily from lobster landing in Clinton and make fresh lobster rolls at Harvey’s beach in Old saybrook ct .

  9. I think you should mention 56 Diner in Branford (right off the exit) Wonderful lobster roll for only $13.99 with chips and coleslaw. best deal around!

      1. I agree. Being a Connecticut native, I just don’t get these cold lobster rolls in Massachusetts!

        1. This a clearly a matter of preference. You don’t have to “get” cold lobster rolls, you are not paying for them nor eating them. Both are delicious to the one consuming them.

  10. I guess the author never went to The Main Moose in Columbia CT. They have huge delicious hot and cold lobster rolls. Everyone raves about them.

    1. Abbots has been flaunting itself for 50 plus years generally its “ok” location is awsome the cove Fishmarket on the east side of Mystic was a better take out choice years ago, My dad worked at fords when it was a lobster pound I havent been in the area since they opened the restaurant, The Lobster hut is a trailer in Milford nearer the Post road & Jiffy Lube Op stop and shop on the devon side of town its a great roll or platter with frys they have other options cooked to order they give you a pager and let you know when its ready to go , lots of folks grab to go and head to the beach or downtown and eat em on the green 5 thumbs up

  11. It was some years ago, and I forget the name of the place, but there was once a great lobster roll served up at a place on the post road in Waterford (west of New London). It was in a former Dairy Queen and had been suggested by New England Monthly magazine (also now gone). Anybody remember the name ?

  12. I vote for Knot Norms however a lobster roll is just a lobster roll and they’re pretty much all the same

  13. Abbotts in the Rough was very disappointing and nothing at all like the picture shows. We barely had a smattering of lobster meat and the prices were outrageous for the food served on a small hamburger roll. Clinton Lobster landing Shack is the best

  14. I live within walking distance to the lobster shack and can’t believe they made this list . There are 5 better places to get a lobster roll within a three mile radius of that place . Sandpiper a block away is better and cheaper . Lennys In Branford is my favorite around here .

    1. both places my most favorite! I also love Ed’s in Clinton I think? Right on US 1. Everything they cook..yum!

  15. My wife and I went to Abbott’s late summer.
To say the least , she was disappointed.
She gets a better lobster sandwich at Blount’s clam shack in Warren,R.I.
The drive we took was definitely not worth it.

  16. LOBSTA LANDING/CLINTON! The very, very, very best! Tried all over New England! Oh, incidently….. everyone’s taster is different…same product.

  17. Lobster Landing in Clinton is the very best! We have been going there for many years and love everything about it from the cute little dilapidated shack right on the water, to the quirky, friendly character owner Eneo Bacci. But the best thing about it is the delicious tender sweet buttered lobster rolls they serve on a toasted roll at a more reasonable price than most! If you haven’t tried them yet, make a point of going when they open back up in the Spring. They are open from April through December.

  18. I agree with Angela’s comment above. The Main Moose in Columbia, CT is phenomenal. Not a coastal shack but worthy of best mentions. Nestled deep in the woods, this seasonal place is home to the best seafood New England has to offer. Best lobster rolls and whole belly clams bar none this side of the Atlantic! Give it a try!
