For several years I made a region outside of New England my home. There was a lot to miss, but more than anything, I longed for the summers. I was landlocked and had no outlet from the oppressive humidity that defined the warmer months. Trips to the shore and the sweet smell of the sea-salt air are baked into my childhood memories—and later, just knowing that I could go and see the ocean if I wanted to felt vital, almost essential. Still does.
But where to go? In this issue we pose the fun and informative question, ‘what are New England’s best beach towns?’ Which beachfront communities, in other words, offer up that quintessential summer experience of unfurling a blanket on the sand and listening to the waves hit the shore? Where, sun-kissed and ready for sundown, can you stroll the streets, poking into shops, and exploring different places to eat? What town serves up the season so perfectly that you’ll come back to it some cold February day and think, ‘yes, I could use a little of that right now.’
Did your favorite make our list? I’d love to know. Whether you agree with us or not, tell us what you love most about your favorite beach town.
