Dartmouth’s Baker-Berry Library is home to more than just books. In this season 4 segment of Weekends with Yankee (episode 413), we are in Hanover, New Hampshire to discover one of Dartmouth’s crown jewels. Baker-Berry Library houses one of the most impressive cyclical murals in the United States, the Epic of American Civilization. Painted by one of the “Los Tres Grandes” Jose Clemente Orozco, it depicts the history of civilization in North America from the Aztecs to modernity. We talk to associate professor of Art History Mary Coffey who interprets Jose Clemente Orozco’s mural and highlights the significance of his work. Dartmouth houses many gems, but this mural ranks among the best.
