On this episode of Weekends with Yankee, we join co-host Amy Traverso and James Beard Award-nominated chef David Vargas, who is bringing his Mexican heritage to Vida Cantina, his acclaimed restaurant in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Amy and David start out at Tuckaway Farm, where farmer Chuck Cox is growing heirloom flint corn, before heading to David’s mini-factory, where Chuck’s corn is crafted into perfectly toasted tortillas. We take those tortillas back to David’s restaurant, where we cook up delicious lobster mole tacos. Then we head north to Lisbon, New Hampshire, where co-host Richard Wiese hops on an ATV to see firsthand why this New England pastime is so popular, especially during peak foliage season. We then take to the skies at Morningside Flight Park in Charlestown, New Hampshire, with a sunset hang gliding lesson over the Connecticut River Valley. Finally, we head to the most highly anticipated event of the year on Martha’s Vineyard: Grand Illumination Night. We experience the 150th anniversary of the event and celebrate with residents who have decorated their houses for generations with paper lanterns both old and new.
