A few summers ago, I spent part of a week near Provincetown, Massachusetts, for a Yankee story on the Cape Cod National Seashore. It was midweek, and the crowds that often define the Provincetown summer experience had thinned out. We strolled downtown, ate well, and enjoyed a little beach time.
That was the first extended visit I’d made to Provincetown, and it made me realize how distinctly different New England’s coastal towns are. There’s the honky-tonk vibe of Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, and the understated beauty of Edgartown, Massachusetts. A famous seaside walk marks Ogunquit, Maine, while gilded glamour flavors Newport, Rhode Island.
In this issue, we take you to our favorite coastal towns in the region as well as share the top reasons for visiting them—adventurers will have plenty to do in Bar Harbor, Maine, for instance, while beach loungers can find their tribe in Madison, Connecticut.
It’s the start of summer! In New England! Happy travels.
