Best Independent Bookstores in New England
Where are the best independent bookstores in New England? We asked associate editor (and independent bookstore co-owner) Joe Bills for a list of favorites.

Coffee By Design | Portland, Maine
Photo Credit : Katherine KeenanDo you share our love for independent bookstores? Fortunately, New England is home to many fine shops carrying a wide assortment of books, many with additional used selections and some serving coffee. What more could you ask for? Read on for a list of the best independent bookstores in New England.
It has been said that I never met a bookstore I didn’t like, and I think that is probably true. Big or small, focused or eclectic, bookstores are entertainment, education, relaxation, and inspiration all at once. New England is blessed by many wonderful bookstores, and yes, I like them all. But there are some I love. Here, in no particular order, are a handful of favorites.
The Best Independent Bookstores in New England
Broadside Bookshop | Northampton, MA
Now in its fifth decade, Broadside is the very definition of a community bookshop. In this case, the community in question happens to be Northampton, one of the country’s greatest college towns. Although relatively small in square footage, Broadside boasts an impressive collection of both fiction and literary nonfiction, and a terrific selection of hard-to-find journals.
Brookline Booksmith | Brookline, MA
Since 1961, when they opened their doors as Paperback Booksmith, this shop has been “dedicated to the fine art of browsing.” They also have great customer service and a pretty impressive track record when it comes to attracting A-list authors for readings and appearances. That said, their announcement of a 2020 expansion that will add 4,000-square-feet, including a 45-seat cafe, is cause for celebration. We might never leave.
Crow Bookshop | Burlington, VT
What started as a used bookshop has changed with the times, and Crow now supplements their impressive selection of “experienced” books with a growing catalog of new titles. From the creaky floors to the eclectic ephemera, the entire shop has a quirky, fun feel. This Burlington shop is a bookshop-lover’s bookshop.
Gibson’s Book Store | Concord, NH
For more than a century, Gibson’s has been serving up books in downtown Concord, but if you haven’t visited since their move in 2013, you are really missing out. With an impressive café and plenty of comfortable seating to go along with a wide-ranging book selection, Gibson’s is getting older and better.
Grolier Poetry Bookshop | Cambridge, MA
I’m a sucker for great specialty bookshops, and Grolier’s is part of the reason why. This is easily the smallest shop on the list, but its 15,000 volumes—all poetry—are nonetheless a sight to behold. The shop is owned and operated by poets, and it shows.
Gulf of Maine Books | Brunswick, ME
You’ll be taken care of here. Since 1979, Gulf of Maine has been a Brunswick staple. Friendly, knowledgeable service and a great selection make sure that trend continues. Local authors are amply supported here, which is always a plus, and it feels like every book on every shelf is there for a reason.
Harvard Book Store | Cambridge, MA
Years ago, Harvard Book Store was the center of a spiraling constellation of Harvard Square bookshops. Times have changed, and so has the neighborhood, but this oasis of what used to be remains. The selection is as scholarly and impressive as you would expect, but it is the events that really set Harvard Book Store apart. Does your favorite writer have a new book coming out? The odds are good that he or she will be reading here.
hello hello books | Rockland, ME
You know that feeling when you stumble upon an unexpected treasure that you just can’t wait to share with your friends? That’s hello hello, in a nutshell. Despite its small size and relative newness (in its current embodiment, the store opened in 2011, although its roots run through Second Read and Rock City all the way back to 1992). This gem of a shop in Rockland does a little bit of everything—you’ll find new and used books, gifts, magazines, crafts and more—but the key here is the curation. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at every turn.
Northshire Bookstore | Manchester Center, VT
Northshire does it right. The coffee is excellent. The chairs are comfy and well located. The children’s section is so expansive that it spans the entire top floor. The selection of gifts, games and toys is wonderfully eclectic. The events calendar is brimming with big name authors and locals alike. And the books? They’ve got it all in this Manchester gem.
R.J. Julia Booksellers | Madison, CT
The café is excellent, the book selection is comprehensive and its proximity to New York lends the shop a surprising amount of starpower, in terms of both events and customer base. You never know who you’ll see in this Madison shop. Despite all that, however, it is the little touches—like the handwritten recommendations from staff—that resonate and make this a store worth returning to again and again.
Sherman’s Maine Coast Bookshop and Café | Damariscotta, ME
Since being purchased by Sherman’s Books and Stationary, the Maine Coast Bookshop has not only maintained its charm, but has built on it. The selection is vast, and the shop is a cultural center for the town, and a place where tourists and locals mingle. The time passes quickly here, but never feels wasted.
Symposium Books | Providence, RI
With a terrific selection of both new and used books, there’s always a treasure to be found in this Providence shop. The art section here is particularly impressive, and if it is a graphic novel you are looking for, they probably have it in stock. The organization is sometimes a bit lacking, but that only makes the hunt more fun!
Toadstool Bookshop | Peterborough, NH
For more than 50 years, this venerable shop has been the beating heart of downtown Peterborough. With terrific selections of new releases, tried and true favorites, used books, and music, there is always treasure to be found. Their companion store down the road in Keene is pretty great, too.
An Unlikely Story Bookstore and Café | Plainville, MA
An Unlikely Story is a privileged bookstore, and it shows in all the best ways. Created and funded by author Jeff Kinney, whose Diary of a Wimpy Kid books have been huge bestsellers, An Unlikely Story is the shop most other bookstores wish they could be. The books are creatively displayed and very well curated. Predictably enough, the children’s section is particularly good. Every fixture in the shop has an interesting backstory. The café is superb and comfortable, and the upstairs event area hosts a diverse lineup of reading and events that often draw big crowds.
MORE of the Best Independent Bookstores in New England
Nothing is quite so subjective as a list of favorites, of course, so if asked tomorrow my list could well be a bit different. The following shops are equally excellent, and on a different day may well have made my list. All of them are worth your time and deserve your patronage:
Longfellow Books, Portland, ME
Odyssey Bookshop, South Hadley, MA
Porter Square Books, Cambridge, MA
RiverRun Bookstore, Portsmouth, NH
Schoenhof’s Foreign Books, Cambridge, MA
Trident Booksellers and Café, Boston, MA
For our purposes here, I focused on stores that sell new books. My used bookstore list? Let’s leave that for another time.

My Dads Bookstore in Franklin Mill store should be included as well.
Note that all the stores mentioned are in larger metro areas, associated suburbs, and mid-size towns. But let me nominate Blue Hill Books, Blue Hill, Maine, as proof that a small store can serve a small community away from the center by accommodating wide reading tastes, the flux of seasonal customers, and excellent selection of classics and new titles, all overseen by literate owner-staff of three.
Titcomb’s Bookshop in Sandwich, MA is a treasure with new books, old books, toys and gifts. Not to be missed on a visit to Cape Cod!
A lot of stores got left out. Amherst Books in Amherst, MA and World Eye Books in Greenfield, MA are 2 that deserve a mention.
The Bookmill in Montague, MA. “Books you don’t need in a place you can’t find.”
My favorite is missing from your list: The Country Bookseller by the water in Wolfeboro, NH offers a wide variety of best sellers, classics, books of local interest, and a large selection of children’s books. Well- known local and national authors arrive for book signings and a book group meets monthly. Also, the “Book Nook” offers delicious locally roasted coffees, an assortment of teas, a delicious selection of gelatos, smoothies, and homemade baked goods. Karen Baker has created a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere and will gladly order any book she may not have in stock. Sittng by the window, thumbing through a book, and looking out on Lake Winnipesaukee is one of my favorite ways to spend some “me” time.
Surprised that Jabberwocky Bookshop in Newburyport, MA, http://www.jabberwockybookshop.com, was left off your list! Wide variety of new books, plenty of author readings, and a booster of the very popular Newburyport Literary Festival (www.newburyportliteraryfestival.org).
World Eye Books in Greenfield deserves a shoutout !
Books on the Square in Providence, RI
Another hidden gem is Bank Square Books in Mystic Connecticut. A large selection, very knowledgable staff and a beautiful setting!
Please add a tiny bit of the Maine coastline bookshop jewels…
De Wolfe & Wood
2 Waterboro Rd, Alfred, ME 04002
&
Douglas Harding Rare Books
2152 Post Rd, Wells, ME 04090
&
Green Hand Bookshop
661 Congress St, Portland, ME 04101
The Book Mill in Montague, MA whose claim is: “books you don’t need in a place you can’t find”. Great café, outdoor seating on the river, an artist community center/shop on the premises. Great place!
My favorite book store is absent from your list. I still do business with them even though I reside in Arizona at present.
I want to echo the sentiments of N. and say that I, too, am surprised that Jabberwocky didn’t make the list!
The Bookstore and Get Lit Wine Bar in Lenox, MA!
An Unlikely Story Bookstore and Café is fantastic… Thank you for including it in your list of bookstores to visit. Many of the unique pieces of furniture, tables, and display pieces were made by a Master Craftsman and his small two craftsman team at Creative Art Furniture. His name …Steven C Staples….his workshop and showroom is located in Attleboro, MA. He and wife, Christine, have been in business for over 43 yrs. The beautiful pieces he designs and creates are exceptional. Plesse take a moment to see their story at http://www.creativeartfurniture.com.
Water Street Bookstore in Exeter, NH should not be missed!!! Great sellers, author presentations regularly, good service! http://www.waterstreetbooks.com
The Savoy Bookstore in Westerly, RI. Relatively new, but absolutely fabulous. It is exactly what a bookstore should be.
Don’t forget the charming Andover Book Store in Andover, MA. A fireplace going and easy chairs in front of it. What could be better on a chilly day?
Titcomb’s Bookstore on Route 6A in Sandwich, Mass. has a wonderful collection of new and used books, children’s section and local Cape Cod authors. It’s pleasant, friendly folks and a great selection!
I like Booklover’s Gourmet in Webster Ma. There are used books and new books. Also a variety of unique gifts and crafts. You can sit and relax with coffee or tea and baked goods. They have events going on also.
Do you CT is devoid of all great book stores?
In Newfane, Vermont Olde and New England Books http://www.oldeandnewenglandbooks.com
The Mustard Seed Bookstore in Bath, Maine.
The Country Bookseller in Wolfeboro, NH….so friendly, cozy reading nooks, a view of the back harbor, a cute cafe and tons of great reads 🙂
Eight Cousins in Falmouth Ma is a wonderful place to shop. Great staff. Make it a must while on the Cape.
A trip to Cape Cod, Falmouth is not complete until you visit Eight Cousins!!
What about Titcomb’s in Sandwich, MA?
Island Books in Middletown, RI. Despite the fact a Barnes & Noble moved into town, she remains open with loyal customers that have been with her for years.
World Eye Bookshop in Greenfield is a small, but well-stocked, community oriented bookshop run by friendly, knowledgeable people.
Hickory Stick Bookstore in Washington Depot, CT, is worth seeking out.
Bunch of Grapes in Vineyard Haven is worth a look as well.
Nonesuch Books in Biddeford and in South Portland are two independents that I buy from in southern Maine. BookMarc’s is a store that I purchase from in Bangor. If you’re a Stephen King fan, they have his books here.
How could you not add The Concord Bookshop, Main St., Concord, MA and the Willow Book Store on Route 2A in Acton.
If you go to Concord(Ma),don’t miss out on The Barrow Bookstore .It’s a used book shop right down the street from Concord Books, making your trip a two- fer.
The Country Bookseller in Wolfeboro, NH, is warm, comfortable, inviting, has a huge selection of books and a cafe with delicious coffee and baked goods. The staff is friendly and very helpful. Regular special events like book signings, and window seats that look out on the lake……..this shop is not to be missed when in NH!
I love Porter Square Books in Cambridge. It’s laid-back, with a small food bar and outdoor tables. I often go there to browse, get some coffee, and do some writing. Lovely!
Morgan Hill Book Store in New London, NH is a perfect gem. Shouldn’t be missed. A great selection, fantastic staff and although I am not a permanent resident, I will order books from them. To visit, browse and shop there is a treat.
I think the challenge here is with the title. The word “best” implies some standard that is not included in the article. If you said “Favorite” or “Outstanding” then that could be both true and not exclusive of others. IMHO every independing bookstore is a gem and worthy of support.
I would like to add Booklover’s Gourmet to the list of independent booksellers. It’s a wonderful bookstore offering new and used books, hand crafted items from around the world and wonderful locally baked pastries which you can enjoy with organic teas or coffees! Love the store and the owner, Deb Horan!
Sounds great! Where is this?
Bridgton Books in Bridgton, Maine!! This is the first place the grandchildren want to visit in town. Friendly and knowledgeable and can allways can recommend a good read.
I agree with Ginny. That bookstore is really great. The staff is very friendly and very knowledgeable and it’s been there a long time too..
I agree with Sheila’s comment (Nov. 29) regarding the article’s title. Bookstores, especially independents, often develop specific, devoted clientele, so my “Best” wouldn’t necessarily be your “Best.” One of my Favorite bookstores is Bookends, in Winchester, MA. They’ve been in business for many years, and have a lovely selection of well-curated books for children and adults, as well as cards, music, author visits, unusual gifts, and free delivery (!) within Winchester. Bookends is also very active on the local scene, working with schools and town events.
Thank you Rosemary for the terrific “shout out” for Book Ends, Main Street, Winchester MA! My store has been here since 1984 and still going strong because of folks like you who come back again & again!
I also love The Country Bookseller in Wolfeboro, NH and never fail to visit (and buy) whenever I’m in town. Love the lake view from the window seat, great selection of titles across all genres. A true gem and great addition to the community. Another plus – small cafe and free WiFi.
I believe the very best bokstore I have ever been in is Jabberwocky in Newburyport, MA. Going there is always a lovely experience!
Oh what a great place! I haven’t been in years. Your comment makes me want to go for a road trip!
The unlikely story has become my new favorite. It is so welcoming and designed particularly for young readers. The extra bonus is the authors program where Jeff brings in local authors, e.g. Bob Ryan of the Globe to talk about their book. That is a special treat for any reader/fan. My grandchildren love the place.
Let’s add Barrington Books in Barrington – and in Garden City, Cranston!
Left Bank Books in Belfast, ME, where there are actually several interesting independent bookstores.
Toad Hall in Rockport!
I love Amherst Books, Porter Square Books and The Book Mill and Jabberwocky. All need a place on this list too
Bear Pond Books, Stowe, VT
I love Bear Pond in Montpellier VT! Do they have another in Stowe? Those folks are really knowledgeable.
Yes! Bear Pond Books in Montpelier is one of my absolute favorite bookstores on the planet. It is the epitome of local, independent, and community-oriented.
I’ve visited both places. The store in Montpelier is open again, after dealing with flood damage in July. They were pretty busy on a Wednesday afternoon, which was good to see. They told me they are unrelated to Bear Pond books in Stowe. The Stowe location is also a good store with a large selection of books and gifts; nooks and crannies to explore.
The Left Bank bookstore in Belfast, Maine is my favorite. The staff are knowledgable and helpful and the stock is plentiful and diverse. A generally great place.
Yes, shout out to Left Bank Book in Bath, ME. Great staff.
Sorry, BELFAST, Me. For Left Bank Books.
Absolutely my favorite! Very diverse offerings, including a lot of Maine themed and Maine authored books as well as some great in-person author events!
Flying Pig Bookstore, Shelburne, Vermont. They just celebrated their 20th anniversary too!
We are lucky to have so many great bookstores in New England. I am on sort of a quest to visit as many as possible. I love the Book Bear in West Brookfield. And, for children’s books, Park Street Books in Medfield, Ma … the largest children’s bookstore in New England.
It’s really nice to hear that Grolier Poetry Bookshop has over 15,000 volumes of poetry! There is only a tiny section for poetry in my local Barnes and Noble. I would really love to make it to Massachusetts one day to check it out.
Great place with a great history…put it on you to do list…you won’t regret it!
I’m so surprised that the Montague Book Mill is not on the list. I’m hoping it’s only because the writer hadn’t been there. Super cool bookstore located in an old mill. Comfy chairs by big windows that over look the rushing water. Great little cafe and other little shops on the grounds. Make sure to get directions from their website, don’t trust god is this amazing out of the way but so worth going to book shop.
BEARLY READ BOOKS , RTE 20 , SUDBURY , MASS. –A wonderful roadside book Shop with a vast selection of books on local history , New England History , Maritime , Civil War , and so much more , Sit in a cozy chair , and maybe one of the Stores cats may sit with you
This seems to be about new book retailers,so fans of Montague et al,mourn not. I see that Books On The Square,in the idyllic oasis of Providence’s Waverly Square got a shout from a texter. This lesser known part of the city , located east of Brown University over by beautiful Blackstone Blvd. and the Seekonk Riverfront is worth an afternoon. Booklovers’ joy will be doubled by the adjacent Paper Nautilus Used Books ,and coffee shops as well.
Yes,I meant “Waverly”,not Wayland square..
WAYLAND square!!!! What is wrong with me!
My absolute favorite is Mainely Murders in Kennebunk, ME – murder mysteries from all over the world – primarily gently used but the delightful and extremely knowledgeable proprietors will order new books for you. Also loved Concord Bookstore and Willow Books when we lived in MA.
Oops! Make that”Wayland Square” in Providence
Bank Square Books in Mystic and its sister store Savoy in Westerly, RI. Not just great stores, but great programming and lectures. A remarkable community resource.
White Birch Books North Conway NH is a unique and beautiful independent book store. Their recommendations are usually spot on. The interior design, custom made for the store, reminds me of a Hobbit dwelling.
R. J. Julia and Wesleyan have entered onto a partnership to open a bookstore/cafe on Main Street Middletown Ct. The store is scheduled to open June 3, 2017
The Water Street Bookstore in Exeter, NH is top-notch. Exeter has become a tourist destination and this bookstore, with its frequent visdit by authors, is a gem.
Concord Bookshop, 65 Main Street, Concord, MA – A great variety of new books, lots of children’s books and many author events.
My favorite is definitely Wicked Good Books in Salem, MA! It’s the first place I stop every year when I visit!
I love the Country Bookseller in Wolfeboro, NH. With their Book Nook Cafe and cover-out displays, this treasure in the heart of Wolfeboro has been in business for over 31 years. The friendly owner and helpful staff makes you feel right at home. Treat yourself to a smoothie, sorbetto, or gelato while browsing their extensive collection of books.
The Hickory Stick in Washington, Ct located among some of the finest authors who read there. Quiet, out of the way and set in an area which hasn’t really left the 19th century.
Toadstool Bookshop in Keene and Milford, NH!
Storybook Cove in Hanover, MA is my favorite. It is primarily a children’s bookstore but features some adult books as well and will order anything that is available that you want. Janet is delightful!
The Country Bookseller in Wolfeboro. NH. Karen Baker is just the best! When she was just newly opened I needed a book for a class in,North Conway. Karen ordered it for me and put it on her own credit card to save me a trip. When I buy books The Country Bookseller is my favorite place.
Books on the Square, Providence, RI
What on earth kind of list is this if it doesn’t mention Everyone’s Books, an independent bookstore in Brattleboro open since 1984 and still going strong?! Knowledgeable staff, an emphasis on social justice, literary fiction and kids books (but also with great history, nature writing and environmental sections) it’s a hub in this community and unmissable for book lovers! Love the Book Mill, too.
Everyone’s Books is excellent! Brattleboro VT. Mystery on Main is no more sadly.
And the Book Mill in Montague Ma is a used bookstore but wonderful nonetheless.
The Bookloft in Great Barrington, MA
Books on the Square in Providence, RI is my favorite bookstore. Not only do they have a wide selection of books and great accessories, they have a section of children’s books with reading time for children. Books also have three book clubs that meet once a month. Even dogs are welcome and are given a treat. The welcoming associates give the buyer extra attention and make sure you are satisfied before you leave the store. I just love Books on the Square!
Water Street Books in Exeter, NH …wonderful bookstore
The Hickory Stick Bookstore in Washington Depot, CT is one of the most wonderful places for books and book lovers. Always something going on!
We love the Hickory Stick! I walk out with my armload of books and feel that all is right with the world!
We love Hickory Stick Bookstore in Washington Depot , CT . We love spending the morning at Marty’s for breakfast and coffee then walk next door for books . Great selection and the staff is wonderful .
The Co-op Bookstore at the University of Connecticut, Storrs always picks out fascinating books.
River Run Books in Portsmouth, Nh has moved to Daniel St as of Januarty 2018.
The Book Bear in West Brookfield, MA is a great place in a small town. We were able to find a book for one of our grandson’s summer reading program.
Main Street BookEnds in Warner, NH! They were featured on NH Chronicle for a whole week this month. So much more than a bookstore.
Bookstacks in Bucksport, ME is a great little indie bookstore. It has a mixture of new and used and a great community feel.
The Littleton Bookstore in Littleton New Hampshire is a great little place. Lovely childrens section as well.
Bunches of Grapes on Martha’s Vineyard
What? No shout-outs to bookstores on Cape Cod? Two of my faves are the Brewster Bookstore, which hosts numerous events, especially in the summer. And Where the Sidewalk Ends in Chatham. Although small, it offers an excellent selection, and the kids’ annex is pretty amazing.
Yes! And also in Chatham, The Yellow Umbrella, all the new books, fiction and non, that you want to read on vacation as well as a wonderful collection of new and old from authors on the Cape featuring local places.
Books on the Square in Providence, RI is my favorite – it is cozy and comfortable and the staff are so helpful and nice – they treat you like family!!
Books on the Square on the East Side of Providence; Barrington Books & Barrington Books Retold (Barrington & Cranston)…StillwaterBooks (Pawtucket) – brand new!
Titcomb’s in East Sandwich, MA gets my vote as a quintessential new England and Cape Cod bookstore.
Schoenhof’s Foreign Books closed their brick and morter store in March 2017. Good news: you can order from their lavishly stocked website.
Not Popular but most will agree Newspapers and Bookstores are becoming part of our past. No No No books will never go away but information technology is our obvious future
I can’t wait to visit them all! Bank Square Books in Mystic, CT and The Savoy Bookstore in Westerly, RI both get my vote.
Thanks so much for including us on this list! Our tagline is ‘small but powerful’ and your paragraph on us pretty much sums that up.
I actually don’t think this headline shojuld be BEST. Maybe your favorites? Where are the Phoenix Books stores in Vermont (Essex, Burlington, Chester, Rutland) and their Yankee Bookshop in Woodstock? They are independents to the core. Bartleby’s in Wilmington, VT? Others commented on this, but no Water Street or Jabberwocky? I am also surprised that the amazing Brookline Booksmith just gets a mention and not a feature.
Great list–look forward to getting to the stores I haven’t been to. I also love Symposium in Providence but I gotta give a shout out to the pretty-much-still-brand-new Riffraff!
I would like to add perhaps the newest entry: Bookery in Manchester, NH. It has only been open for a short time, but it already feels like a hometown bookstore (which Manchester sorely needed!) Great cafe, cool vibe, very tasteful decor, homemade donuts, good selection of books, perfect ambience for sitting and studying…what’s not to love?!
How could they leave out The Book Barn in Niantic, CT?! It is sprawling compound of books over three locations! Beautiful gardens, cats wandering among the shelves, rows upon rows of books… it is a sight to behold. CT is New England too!
How about the bookstore at the beautiful Water’s Edge resort in Westbrook, CT
Fine Print Booksellers in Kennebunkport, ME. Small but great!!!!
Atticus Bookstore Cafe in New Haven, CT
What about the bookstore in Concord,MA?

Unlikely Story Plainville Ma, Mr Titcombs Sandwich Ma & Eight Cousins Falmouth Ma…all great book stores to visit, you will not be disappointed!
Mainely Murders in Kennebunk, ME, is a treasure! The owners are very knowledgeable and the stock of books is extensive.
The Owl and Turtle Bookshop and Cafe in Camden – Great in every way!
I was going to mention this one, but you beat me to it.
Charming little shop, owned by a youth family. Cozy and inviting and love the cafe. Great place to mingle and get to know the locals!
Newtonville Books in Newton Centre MA https://www.newtonvillebooks.com/cms/
The Bookery in Manchester, NH!!
I vote for Eight Cousins bookstore in Falmouth, MA, Spirit of ’76 bookstore in Marblehead, MA, and the bookstore in Andover, MA (can’t remember the name). The gift shop at the Hamilton-Wenham Tearoom also has some unique, new books for sale.
The bookstore in Andover is The Andover Bookstore.
The Silver Unicorn in West ActonMA is a great bookstore-large childrens section with weekly activities; book clubs’; support for local authors; author signings and readings
Jabberwocky at The Tannery is always on my list of places to visit when I’m in Newburyport MA. Wonderful bookstore, great staff, two floors of books, they’ll order hard to find books, there’s a lovely points to discount system and the author events make it a very welcoming, happy place.
Paperback Junction in Easton, Massachusetts. Best small bookstore!!
Schoenhof’s no longer runs a brick-and-mortar. On-line orders only. So sad….they were great fun to visit.
Definitely include “Bunch of Grapes”, Martha’s Vineyard!
What about Amherst Books?
Antidote Books, Putney, Vermont. A must-visit if you love poetry, used books, and carefully chosen new books.
How about Innisfree in Meredith, NH? And, Northshire has a “branch” in Saratoga Springs, NY (not New England, yet close enough and has NE roots)! Thank you for the lists and suggestions.
Don’t forget Water Street Books in Exeter, NH – a bibliophile’s bookstore located in a most charming town!????
I LOVE that shop! Great books and gifts too. Bought a beautiful tooled leather journal there
I would also recommend Brewster Book Store in Brewster, MA.
We love Bunch of Grapes (Martha’s Vineyard) Vineyard Haven, MA
Savoy Bookstore,Historic Downtown Westerly,R.I.
I agree Savoy Bookstore in Westerly,RI is a great spot. A cafe & children’s floor.
Letterpress Books in Portland, Maine. Customer service is wonderful!!
I found Broadside bookstore when passing through on a road trip looking for lunch. Needless to say my trip took a few more hours than expected. Walked out with a stack of surprise finds. Lovely shop
Sadly, Cape Cod is not represented on your list. For me the best bookstore is Titcomb’s in Sandwich. The staff there are very pleasant and helpful. Lots going on there all the time and definitely worth a visit.
Eight Cousins in Falmouth is magic.
Jabberwocky in Newburyport. The Bookstore in Lennox. And most certainly, The Big Chicken Barn in Maine 🙂
What about Connecticut? The Book Barn in Niantic and Hickory Stick in Washington Depot are worthy of being the BEST indie bookshops. Instead of the best, this article should be named “Favorite” Bookshops.
I enjoy stopping at Herridge Books in Wellfleet whenever I’m visiting the Cape.
Whitelam Books in Reading MA
Wakefield Books in Wakefield, RI.
The Booklover’s Gourmet is an amazing independent bookstore in Webster, MA.
