Patti Moreno doesn’t like to mess around with expensive, cumbersome compost bins. Instead, she creates cylinder-shaped enclosures out of hardware cloth. “It’s $25 and makes the best and cheapest compost bin,” she says. This method also lets her do something else with her compost: She creates what’s called a “Japanese tomato ring” by planting tomatoes around the container. “They weave around the bin, the branches will grow inside, and the little roots will grow out of all that good compost soil,” she says. “Then you just water the ground and inside the compost bin.”
