Photo Credit : Made Inn VermontBurlington, Vermont, packs a mighty punch. There may not be another city of its size in the country that offers so much to do. A lively downtown, galleries and shops galore, restaurants and craft breweries, easy access to the outdoors, and oh, did we mention those views of Lake Champlain? Planning a visit? Read on for a selection of some of our favorites Burlington, VT, hotels, inns, and B&Bs. Most have appeared in a recent edition of the annual Yankee “Best of New England” Editors’ Choice Awards.
Downtown Burlington’s first new independent hotel in a century is just a short stroll from both Church Street and the lakefront and offers bright, airy, modern accommodations without boutique minimalism. Vermont wood and stonework are everywhere at Hotel Vermont, and farm-to-table cooking is featured at the hotel’s Juniper restaurant.
Burlington’s neighborhood of grand Queen Anne homes begins right where downtown ends. The Lang House is an 1881 beauty that has been transformed into a posh B&B whose 11 rooms display the home’s lavish original craftsmanship while incorporating all the modern conveniences. The two rooms in an 1851 carriage house, set well back from the street, have a country-cottage feel.
Luxe B&B or micro-hotel? Burlington’s newest inn blends 19th- and 20th-century styles—including for-sale Vermont artwork—in a classic, cupola-topped Victorian mansion. While at Made INN Vermont B&B, enjoy gel-topped mattresses, in-room fridges stocked with local delicacies, a sauna, and an outdoor hot tub. Beer and wine are available.
Views of the Adirondacks and Lake Champlain play starring roles at the century-old pet friendly Mt. Philo Inn, located just 12 miles outside of Burlington. But wait, there’s more: four large private suites and a setting right at Mount Philo State Park, offering ample opportunity to walk, bike, and just explore the beautiful Champlain Valley.
Situated on the shores of Lake Champlain, the Inn at Shelburne Farms’ 24 highly individualized rooms vary from cozy to palatial, and four cottages are sequestered by the lake, looking out to the purplish peaks of the Adirondacks beyond. Many guestrooms in the Tudor-style mansion feature furnishings original to the Webb family, who summered here on a 1,400-acre model farm that today supplies meat, dairy, and produce to the inn’s elegant restaurant.
