THE INN ON PUTNEY ROAD
Originally built c. 1930 as housing for the Brattleboro Retreat superintendent and converted to its current use in 1982, the French chateau–style bed-and-breakfast is just steps from downtown. With its beautiful gardens, miles of hiking trails accessible from the backyard, and six distinctively decorated rooms (four in the main building and two in the former carriage house), there is much to recommend here. From the morning sun of the Mountainview Room and the verdant views from the Garden Room to the Jacuzzi and fireplace in the Maple Room, you really can’t go wrong in choosing your accommodations. Rates include full gourmet breakfast. Named a 2014 Yankee Editors’ Pick for “Best Baronial B&B.”

1868 CROSBY HOUSE
Built by mill owner Edward Crosby as a wedding gift for his son in 1868, this Italianate Victorian was purchased by its current owners in 1969. After raising six kids there, they transformed it into a bed-and-breakfast in 1997. There are three guest rooms and two suites, all furnished with an eclectic mix of antiques and collectibles. The original coal-burning fireplaces have been replaced with gas-fired fixtures, but the high ceilings, brass doorknobs, walnut woodwork, and most of the other architectural high points have been lovingly maintained. The Crosby House is located half an hour from downtown, with gorgeous gardens and easy access to hiking and snowshoeing trails. [text_ad]THE LATCHIS HOTEL
Located on Main Street in downtown Brattleboro, this art deco hotel has an unusual setup: The lower portion of the building houses the Latchis Theatre, which first opened in 1938 and still hosts first-run movies, independent films, and live shows. Depending on which side of the hotel your room is on, you may have a view of the mountain, the Connecticut River, or the bustling downtown. Named a 2016 Yankee Editors’ Pick for “Best Downtown Value.”
