Located just across the Massachusetts border but feeling like a return to another era, the farming town of Tiverton, RI, is prized for its quaint collection of shops and galleries surrounded by gray-shingled homes, winding stone walls, old barns, and water views of the Sakonnet River on its way to the Atlantic. Driving Tiverton’s back roads and strolling its historic center, Tiverton Four Corners, you truly experience the “country coastal” Rhode Island vibe.

Here’s a look at my recent early spring visit (my first!) to the 17th-century village of Tiverton Four Corners in Tiverton, RI. Armed with recommendations from a friend who grew up in Tiverton, plus some historical background from the Tiverton Four Corners Walking Tour, I fit as much into my brief overnight visit as possible — as I think you’ll see.

My Tiverton hotel experience came in the form of the most charming rental ever: this c. 1800 schoolhouse, one of the farm stays offered by the kind folks at Sakonnet Farm. Learn more about them in the 2019 Yankee feature “One Nail at a Time.”

I loved the pop of red from that fence!
I loved the pop of red here at the c. 1800 Preserved Tripp’s Wheelwright Shop. From the Tiverton Four Corners Walking Tour: “A two-and-a-half-story wood shingled building, set gable end to the road. It was originally built as a wheelwright shop by William Pitts Bateman. In 1868 it housed the library and Mrs. Preserved Tripp, who lived on the second floor, was the librarian. The building was used as a gas station in the early to mid-20th century.”

Complete with a gently-roaring grist mill.
…complete with gently roaring rapids coming from the c. 1850 A.P. White Grist Mill. From the Tiverton Four Corners Walking Tour: “This one-and-a-half story masonry building with stuccoed stone sides has a central double-door entry in the gable end. It was originally built by William Pitt Bateman, who purchased the land around the brook from Joseph Taber and built the grist mill, store, and wheelwright shop. The area was thereafter known as Pittsville. The gristmill was sold to A.P. White in 1876 and it continued to ground corn for johnnycakes until after WWII.”

The c. 1868 Union Public Library in Tiverton, RI. From the Tiverton Four Corners Walking Tour: "The Union Library is a simple one-story, wood shingle building and is the oldest library in Tiverton and the second oldest in Newport county. The Library Society was founded in March 1820 when a group of young men wanted to establish a social library. The original constitution of the society stated that only "fair and honorable" company could be members and any person guilty of disorderly behavior could be expelled. The location of the library in Four Corners changed several times before the society purchased this Temperance Hall in 1914 from the Independent Order of Good Templars."

For lunch, I was advised to visit Provender for a gourmet sandwich and cookie. From the Tiverton Four Corners Walking Tour "The store was built by Andrew Peregrine White, who lived upstairs above the store. White was a direct descendant of Peregrine White, who was born on the Mayflower and is acknowledged as the first child born to the Pilgrims in the New World. The store was a two story commercial building with a bell-cast mansard roof, cupola, and a bracketed cornice. There is a one story porch across the front and part of one side. There would often be groups of men sitting out on the stoop of this porch. For a while the building served as a post office. White also ran the mill and ice house at nearby Pittsville. This building was restored in 1982."

I then figured I might as well have dessert. No visit to Tiverton Four Corners (or Tiverton, RI, for that matter) is complete without a stop at Gray's Ice Cream.
I figured I might as well have dessert — and no visit to Tiverton Four Corners (or Tiverton, RI, for that matter) is complete without a stop at Gray’s Ice Cream. If you go in April, this is the kind of line you have to wait in. Note: According to its website, Gray’s is open 365 days a year!

A few minutes later, I had my reward. Since they were out of Grapenut, I ordered a cup of maple walnut ice cream. At Gray's, it comes topped with a complimentary shower of walnuts.

Diners love the Boat House for its views of the Sakonnet River, but even of you're not a customer, you can stroll down to the water. Just watch out for seagulls!

  1. Remember Tiverton well. As a Youngster my Grandparents used to take me to the Red Bridge Inn for a very special occasion. Not sure if it is even there any more. In the Fall of 1959 I went through 16 weeks OCS at the Navy Base in Newport and occasionally stopped off in Tiverton for a meal. Have not been back since. Regards, Bob Griffin

  2. I LOVE Tiverton! The entire “South Coast” region (from Dartmouth & Westport MA, to Little Compton & Tiverton RI) is fantastic and vastly underrated.

  3. My late husband, Keith, began Provender. It has been a work in progress for the talented folks of Tiverton. It is a beautiful place, filled with the essence of New England spirit.

  4. My husband’s aunt owned a restaurant, The Macomber House on Bulgarmarsh Road. He has found memories of visiting there in the 1940’s. After her death it became a rooming house.

  5. Nice memories from Bob Griffin but I think he must have meant the Stone Bridge Inn instead of the Red Bridge Inn. The Red Bridge (no inn) is located about 20 miles away in East Providence.

  6. Thank you Aimee for visiting and writing about this beautiful, historic region of New England. Please consider returning this summer for the 15th annual South Coast Artist Studio Tour, July 21-22 and Aug. 18-19, where the doors to the studios of over 70 artists are opened up to visitors from all over New England and beyond. This free event attracts thousands of art lovers to this rich coastal region that includes the towns of Tiverton and Little Compton, RI and Westport and Dartmouth, MA.

  7. Went just over the border to a delicious Portuguese restaurant (can not remember the name) it was a few years ago. Lovely area.

  8. The Rd Dory restaurant is very near to Coastal Roasters and is a great addition to the dining scene in Tiverton. Good water view and very good food!

  9. Aimee, the Provender may be gone, but it was announced in February that the location will be the home of Groundswell Cafe and Bakery…hope they stick with it and open in May,the Rhode island Governess has already started that she does not intended to continue the current restrictions beyond May 8… That location is classic ,I read a wonderful book about that area ,and @100 years ago, there was a sort of general store in that building and the porch out front was the hangout of the local”job seekers”(chronically unemployed), who would idle the days away spitting tobacco and commenting at large ,…you can picture how it must have been, still has that vibe(minus the spitting)…

  10. I grew up in Tiverton, not far from Four Corners. Love it – still visit as often as possible – at least once a year – still have family there. I am surprised there was no mention of Four Corners Grill – they have the best clam chowder! Love Little Compton also.

  11. Tiverton has an interesting history. So the story goes, one of my forefathers had a run in with the law when Tiverton and Little Compton were part of Massachusetts. The sheriff made two trips to Tiverton Four Corners but was unable to arrest the culprit due to safety concerns for the sheriff’s party of seventy some men. Some believe that the peninsula below Fall River, MA that contains Tiverton and Little Compton was ceded to Rhode Island to get rid of the disruptor. If you look at a map of MA and RI, one must leave RI, enter Fall River, MA go a few blocks, turn right, and in less than a quarter mile yo are in RI.

  12. I’ve loved driving through Tiverton as much as just about any other spot in New England. The rolling landscapes and farmhouses make me feel like I’m driving back into history. Gray’s ice cream has been a staple for as long as I can remember. I take my son there just as my parents and grandmother brought me as a child. A great day for me is driving down to Weetamoe Woods for a trail walk, grabbing some ice cream at Gray’s and sitting by the water at Fogland Beach. If I have extra time, I head down to Sakonnet Point and look out at the lighthouse.

  13. Tiverton looks as if I, a female senior widower, might enjoy a trek through such an interesting town. I’m here in Mystic, Ct, a gorgeous seaport town, finally ready to visit equally beautiful spots. Thank you for the recommendation.

  14. Grew up in the southcoast… great memories from article.. bought our seafood from market… went to camp Nanaquacket for girls on Narrangansett Bay… Grinells Beach…… now retired living in lakes region of Maine…thank you for the wonderful article!!

  15. I love Tiverton. Love a day at Fogland Beach, then short drive to Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyard. Great article. Thank you!

  16. Have never been there but sure would like to go. Sounds like a great little town. My boys went to school at NEIT om Warwick. My son is living in North Kingstown, RI. I love the little towns, and hope to get to Tiverton soon..
