Where is your favorite New England summer playhouse?
This post was first published in 2016 and has been updated.
The Priscilla Beach Theater in Plymouth Ma is not to be missed…it’s a revival of a 1937 summer stock residential theater and appeared a few years ago to great success, flying in the face of all things modern. The vibe is amazing;further adjectives fail…a labor of love….
Oakdale Musical Theater, Wallingford, Conn.
We’ve attended performances at the Weston (VT) Playhouse and Williamstown (MA) Theater Festival, but our favorite is consistently the Peterborough Players in NH. Great plays, fabulous performances.
I am surprised not to see Goodspeed Opera House, East Haddam, Connecticut on you list. Original home of “Annie” and many other Broadway bound musicals.
They are quite costly and out of the “summer stock” circuit since they run year round at a substantial price for a tkt…these are not amateur working the boards!
Another vote for the Peterborough Players in NH, which celebrates its 85th season this year (not the “nearly eight decades” cited in your review.) A company of fine professional actors, directors and theater designers, most from NY stages, works with a talented “Second Company” of young aspiring actors and stage technicians to present a range of classics, character studies, contemporary comedy and original drama–plus a big-book musical–from June to mid-Sept, through their technically-sophisticated theater in a charming rustic setting. Consistently receiving top honors in the NH Theatre Awards and often reviewed glowingly in the Wall Street Journal.
A few of my friends and I have gone to the Interlakes
Theater in Meredith and the shows were amazing. We are
deciding which one to see next year!
I’m starting to wonder if your lists are ‘pay to play.’ How did you ever omit the wonderful and well-known Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, MA?
Hi there. Any sponsored content on the site is clearly marked. We’re sorry to hear that we missed a theatre company, but our posts are frequently updated, and we know that many of our readers enjoy reading the comments to learn what we may have missed, so thank you for sharing your recommendation. Have a great day!
We like to travel explicitly for theatre — it would be helpful to have a reverse lookup list showing the titles of the shows that will be playing all
summer, with a link to the theatre. That way, one can quickly find shows that are of interest, regardless of which city/town they are located in.
Summer Theatre of New Canaan, CT
I was 14 years old and summered at Popponesett Beach MA. I worked part time at the Popponesett Inn as a Beach Boy raking beach, setup cabanas/beach chairs. Quite often movie stars stayed in the Inn’s cottages, for example: Sid Caesar, Imogene Coca, Loyd Bridges, Judy Garland, Rock Hudson, George Hamilton, and Fay Ray. Was there a Summer Playhouse (tent) in Hyannis MA?
Portland Stage, Maine…
Hackmatack Playhouse will be closing permanently after its 2022 season.
