Centrally located in Salem’s historic district, the Merchant offers a boutique hotel experience and a room where George Washington slept. THE SALEM INN

In the late 1980s, Dick and Diane Pabich purchased a 1834 home in downtown Salem, named it the West House, and converted it into a 22-room inn. In the years since, the Pabiches have renovated two additional downtown properties, the Peabody House and the Curwen House, to expand their upscale offerings to 40 guest rooms total.

  1. It’s been too long since I’ve stayed there but I absolutely adore the Hawthorne Hotel with its quiet elegance (except maybe during their famous annual Halloween Ball!), perfect location and terrific staff. Even if one can’t stay overnight, it’s definitely worth it to stop in for a meal either in Nat’s or The Tavern. I’ve also had the chance to spend a night at The Merchant shortly after they made their Salem debut and I have to say that I loved it – the history of the building coupled with the fabulous rooms made for a terrific stay and it was an easy walk to the Peabody-Essex Museum which is the true jewel in Salem’s crown! You should warn people though that if they are going to try to stay overnight during Salem’s Haunted Happenings in October, they need to book way, way, way in advance or risk disappointment.
