Yankee covers the six New England states—Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont—with an emphasis on what is happening in the region today.
Before contacting Yankee, those wishing to contribute to the magazine are strongly advised to read several current issues to get a sense of our voice, visual style, and areas of focus.
Yankee welcomes professional, detailed pitches for longer reported narratives (2,000–4,000 words) as well as for shorter articles related to New England living, home & garden, food, or travel. We will also consider personal essays related to the New England experience, ideally no more than 800 words. Email submissions are preferred: editors@yankeepub.com.
Any story pitch should indicate why you’re right for this topic and why you’re able to write it. When applicable, it should include suggestions for sidebars, tip boxes, resource lists, or other supporting elements, as well as ideas for related website content.
If a story pitch hinges on an upcoming event or specific time of year, please note that Yankee plans the bulk of its lineup 12 to 14 months before publication. Plan accordingly.
If you’ve never worked with Yankee before, please include samples of or links to your work (published clips preferred).
Yankee does not accept poetry, fiction, or cartoons; syndicated fillers or serialized articles/stories; or articles previously published elsewhere.
Given the volume of queries we receive, please do not call to check on the status of your submission. Allow six to eight weeks for a response.
Yankee commissions photography and illustrations from experienced professionals; it also collaborates with them to publish existing work that fits with the magazine’s editorial mission. If you are interested in working with us, email senior photo editor Heather Marcus (heatherm@yankeepub.com). Do not send any unsolicited original photography or artwork.
Yankee buys all rights to the articles it assigns. For commissioned photography and artwork, it buys exclusive rights for up to six months after publication and nonexclusive, indefinite rights thereafter.
For both manuscripts and artwork, Yankee pays on acceptance by the assigning editor and with the contributor’s submitted invoice.
