Engraved Wooden Spoons

Pyrography is the art of burning images and designs into wood. A pen with a metallic tip is heated and then used to “draw” onto a wood surface. Pyrography can be used to create wood plaques or wood blocks, engrave signs, or make freestyle designs on any wooden object. Decorating wooden spoons with pyrography is a relatively fun and easy project.

Materials needed to make Engraved Wooden Spoons:

• A pyrography/wood-burning pen (these pen sets are sold in craft stores in the hardware and/or the wood craft section)
• Wooden spoons

Directions for making Engraved Wooden Spoons:

1. If you are using a wood-burning pen for the first time then make sure to get all of the pieces removed from the packaging – the metallic tips are often overlooked and accidentally thrown away.
2. Attach the appropriate tip to the pen – the pencil tip or a fine point tip is best for this project.
3. Plug the pen in and allow it to warm up. Make sure it sits in the holder while warming up. Warning – these pens get dangerously hot.
4. Start with simple designs first. Polka dots are the easiest design to make because all you have to do is touch the tip of the pen to the wood. You can make a line of dots or follow the curves of the spoon making polka dots as you go.
5. Once you get the feel for how the pen works you can try other designs like lines or drawings.

On a different note, after a few years of writing for The Crafty Yankee, this is my final post. I can’t even begin to thank Yankee Magazine enough for giving me this amazing opportunity to write for them. The years flew by!
