Fall Foliage Scene Terrarium

Materials to Make a Fall Foliage Scene Terrarium

• Open glass container
• 3/8-inch pebbles (for base drainage)
• Horticultural charcoal
• Potting soil
• Live Hypnum curvifolium (sheet moss)
• Alternanthera ficoidea ‘Red Threads’ (Joseph’s Coat)
• Heuchera rubescens ‘Troy Boy’ or other miniature pink coral bells
• Miniature hosta (such as ‘Cherish’ or ‘Green Mouse Ears’)
• Flat river rocks (for the stone wall)
• Solanum aethiopicum (ornamental eggplant or pumpkin-on-a-stick)
• Rake and wheelbarrow figurines

Instructions to Make a Fall Foliage Scene Terrarium

1. Wearing gloves, lay 1 to 1-1/2 inch of pebbles into the base of the glass container.
2. Add 1 tablespoon of horticultural charcoal to the bottom layer and mix it with the pebbles.
3.  Add a 2-inch layer of potting soil and firm it lightly.
4. Dig a hole in the potting soil, insert the Joseph’s Coat, and firm it into place.
5. Dig holes for the coral bells and hosta, insert, and firm into place.
6. Water the plants and the soil surface lightly.
7. Carpet the ground with sheet moss, firm it down, and water lightly.
8. Build a stone wall by stacking river rocks.
9. Set a few ornamental eggplants on or around the wall (as pumpkins).
10. Add and arrange rake and wheelbarrow figurines.
