Rhododendron Planting Tips
- Choose an area for planting that receives ample amounts of both sunlight and shade — filtered sunlight is ideal. Before attempting to plant, test your soil’s pH. Rhododendrons prefer acidic soil with a pH of about 5.5. PH test kits are simple to use and available to purchase at garden centers. If the soil is not acidic enough, it can be amended with organic matter, such as peat moss. Rhododendrons typically do well in sandy soil.
- Dig a hole 2-3 times the width of the root ball and deep enough so that the top of the root ball is covered by a few inches of soil, but not deep enough to cover the stem of the plant. Place the plant in the hole and water well before covering the root ball.
- Mulch lightly around the top of the root ball to help retain moisture.
Rhododendron Maintenance
- Thorough daily watering is preferred throughout the season of the first planting. After the first year, a new plant should be fine on its own as long as the soil is kept moist.
- In winter, smaller rhododendron shrubs will need protection from heavy snowfall. Before the first snowfall, wrap the branches lightly in burlap and secure with twine. An A-frame style covering or a box style shelter is the best way to shield small, newly planted Rhododendron plants during the harsh winter months. Remove the coverings after the danger of a late-term snow storm in the spring.
I wish I could send a picture of my rhododendron. It is HUGE! One plant that I haven’t done anything to in over 30 years. Last Fall and this Spring I planted a shoot from it and they’re doing well. Hope they do as well as the mother plant.
When is the best time to prune the plant? After the blooms?
How to protect rhodo buds from rodents?
I always make sure to break off the old, spent flowers. This ensures new buds and flowers for the next season. This year was an exceptional year for flowers! My two Rhodies have never been so abundant!
How do I keep deer from destroying my rhododendrons in the winter. I have wrapped them in burlap and have watched the deer tear it off.
Kill the deer & eat them
For clarification, rhodos are not just native to Asia, but there are species native to North America and most other temperate climates and even subtropical ones – the Vireyas. New England boasts several rhodo natives. For more info see the American Rhododendron Society’s website – rhododendron.org.
My rodadendrons bloomed beautifully this past spring to summer and then finished. I’ve noticed new buds in late summer that have not blossemed. Last year this happened and they frozen during a fall frost. I removed them early spring when I was doing my first yard cleanup after a very long cold winter. So do I remove the buds before they freeze, or wait and remove them next spring if they freeze before opening?
Can you keep a rhododendron in house all winter ?
My Rhododendron has had buds on it since last summer. Should I prune the plant now removing all the old buds, and should I feed it coffee, I gave them coffee last spring and they bloomed.
Really nice hints on rhodos. Thanks
They like an acidic soil, I dose them with coffee grounds every spring
