DESCRIBE YOUR CONNECTION TO NEW ENGLAND.

I grew up in a farmhouse on Main Street in Hampstead, NH. I have fond childhood memories of barns and open fields, walking to school and roaming the woods behind the house. I studied at the University of New Hampshire, and then moved to North Conway to rock climb, ice climb, ski and do everything I could outside. So I’ve been connected to New England since the beginning. Travel and assignments take me to other parts of the country and the world, but New Hampshire will always be home.

DESCRIBE YOUR EQUIPMENT.

I currently shoot with Nikon DSLRs, GoPros and my phone. I don’t get wrapped up in chasing the latest equipment. We all have our favorite brands, and they all work. Nikons handle cold and messy weather well, which is key for shooting in the mountains, but most important is having gear that doesn’t get in the way while shooting and just works. New Englanders know weather changes every few minutes. It can help make interesting photos, but it challenges even the best of equipment.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

I’ve always been inspired by people pursuing their passions. Whether it’s a sculptor or an ice climber, the motivation and love of their chosen pursuit always comes out. Photographers Walker Evans, Alfred Stieglitz and contemporary work like Clyde Butcher’s black and white landscapes and Keith Ladzinski’s outdoor adventures inspire me. But I also am inspired by the places I shoot, the weather and how it interacts with our environment. It’s massive and chaotic and adds so much to a photograph. It could be how the light filters through snow squalls or the thunder clouds rolling over the hillside. “Weather” can mean a warm spring breeze or hail, snow and hurricane force winds, plus everything in between. Maybe that’s why I live here in New England, because that inspires me as much as any individual. See more of Joe’s work at klementovichphoto.com

  1. Loved these photos. Visited in NH last fall and took some photos myself. Cant help but take a good shot. Your pictures are awe inspiring. Would love to take some photos like you did. I live in the Berkshires and it is beautiful here also. All the best…Nancy J

  2. What a wonderful write-up Heather! I really enjoyed this article and I’m actually the runner in the second and fourth pictures from the top. Joe Klementovich is an amazing photographer! I really enjoy doing photo shoots, as it gets me out to enjoy the wonderful beauty that New Hampshire has to offer. Joe is a mastermind at his craft and has a great passion for the outdoors. It is always a pleasure doing photo shoots with Joe and I know it’s a similar goal of ours to get people exploring the outdoors. As a Physical and Health Education teacher I share the passion of getting people to explore the outdoors. New England has endless possibilities to immerse yourself within natures’ landscape. A great quote from Thoreau that I simply say to my students about the outdoors is, “All good things are wild and free.” Go out on an adventure and explore!

  3. I grew up in Berlin. My mother lived in North Conway during high school and graduated from Kennett High School. Her father sold the land that they later built “the new Route 16” through in Intervale to the Hill family, who made a lot of money on that property! Debra Hill, who sold vegetables her family grew in those fields my grandfather previously owned and flowers she grew for sale, let my mother and me pick our own vegetables because she knew we “knew how to be careful” in her fields! The famous view from that property is Cathedral Ledge, painted countless times! I have had respiratory problems my whole life (I was diagnosed with sleep apnea several years ago and told I’ve had it my entire life), but I did manage to climb twice to Tuckerman Ravine on Mt. Washington. I was not able to do cross country skiing due to that condition, but I had season tickets at Wildcat Mountain, where I loved to ski, for many years. One of my cousins worked one summer on the Cog Railway and we rode it with him. I loved that! I also climbed Pine Mountain, which wasn’t too difficult for me, because it wasn’t too much of a hike. I think that is only a 1 mile hike up that mountain. My husband and I drove one of our cars to the summit of Mt. Washington on a very clear day and we were able to see the ocean in Portland, ME, 100 miles away from there it was so clear. The Portland, ME ABC affiliate, WMTW-TV is broadcast from the top of Mt. Washington. It was cold up there during the summer, too! My mother skied at Mt. Cranmore in North Conway and she taught me to ski in our back yard, which had a small hill. We took a gorgeous drive on “The Kanc” one September day when the leaves were peak. I will never forget that day the foliage was so gorgeous.

  4. I grew up In Maine and Portsmouth New Hampshire and moved “down south”. I always returned home every year in the summer or fall. When there I always thoroughly enjoyed lobster rolls, clams, fried haddock, scallops, and lobsters. How I miss that New England seafood and of course the top split hot dog rolls!! I cannot get the rolls here in Mississippi or Tennessee. We always took day trips along the seacoast US Route 1 and day trips along the Kancamangus Highway through the White Mountains; what awesome scenery on both day trips!! Actually saw moose “up close” on one of the trips; huge!! I loved family visits, New England scenery, fall county fairs, and great food. I haven’t been able to take the trip for three years but hope to do it this fall. If you haven’t taken these trips, plan to do one as you’ll be forever glad you did

  5. How I love N.H. and Vermont! Worked 4 summers in N.H. 6 miles from the cog and have been up and down Mt. Washington hundred’s of times and loved every one of them. Have climbed the mountain 3 times. It is more beautiful then pictures can show! Went to school in Vermont but I think N.H. will always be my favorite! Nothing in N.J. comes close.
