Seasons matter in New England, and the best harbinger is what’s available at your local farm stand. Farm stands come in many varieties and sizes, from apple orchards to year-round markets. The ones highlighted here are three- or four-season spots, with spring seedlings, summer veggies, fall fruits, and winter seafood. Most of what they sell is harvested daily from their own fields, although they may also offer products from other local farmers.

Family farm offering vegetable and flower plants, sweet corn, pumpkins, and many other veggies, plus pick-your-own tomatoes in August and September. Open April through Christmas Eve.
Alewives Brook Farm
83 Old Ocean House Rd.
This Portland-area farm harvests (and sells) almost every kind of veggie that’ll grow in Maine. The folks here also sell lobsters, clams, and crabs. Open year-round.
C.N. Smith Farm
325 South St. (off Route 106)
Third-generation family business on 90+ acres. Farm visits encouraged; pick-your-own berries, apples, pumpkins, corn, beans, and peas. Open March to Thanksgiving.
99 River Rd.
A working farm since 1835. 50,000 square feet of greenhouses and a variety of crops. Open seasonally; close to White River Junction (VT) intersection of I-91 and I-89.
Walker’s Roadside Stand
261 West Main Rd. (Route 77)
From heirloom tomatoes to the best corn in the state, Coll Walker’s farm has generations of devoted customers. Open June through late October.
Ellie’s Farm Market
952 Darling Rd. (Route 12)
Great cider; huge selection of apples, including heirloom varieties; pumpkins and squashes; vegetables and seedlings. Open May 1 through the end of December.
